THE late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin was known for his fast reflexes and quick Aussie wit.

But now one of the world's slowest moving creatures - a tree snail - has been named in his honour.

Queensland Museum scientist Dr John Stanisic has named a rare species of tree snail Crikey steveirwini.

The snail was found in the mountainous regions of north Queensland's wet tropics near Cairns.

"This is an extremely rare species of snail," Dr Stanisic said.

"So far it has only been found in three locations, all on the summits of high mountains in far north Queensland and at altitudes above 1,000 metres, which is quite unusual for Australian land snails.

"These mountainous habitats will be among the first to feel the effects of climate change and Steve Irwin's tree snail could become a focal species for monitoring this change."

The scientist described Crikey steveirwini as "a colourful snail, with swirling bands of creamy yellow, orange-brown and chocolate giving the shell an overall khaki appearance".

"It was the khaki colour that immediately drew the connection to the late Crocodile Hunter," Dr Stanisic said.

Terri Irwin said her husband would have been delighted to have a new species bear his name and signature catch-cry.

"Steve worked tirelessly to promote conservation, wildlife and the environment and his work enabled the plight of endangered species to reach a whole new audience," Ms Irwin said.

"Steve also had a long history of collaborating with staff at the Queensland Museum and I'm sure he would be pleased to know his name is continuing to highlight a rare and endangered Queensland species."

Steve was such an amazing man and his spirit lives on in Australia. No one around the world who lived during his time will ever forget his strength and incredible enthusiasm. When I am working at the wildlife hospital I often think he will appear around the corner and say g'day!. We miss you Steve! RIP

A snail I can cope with, but news that a Dollar Coin is being minted in his honour is over the top. There are thousands and thousdands of people who have done more for this country and received no recognition. Can we please move on.

It is a pity that those people who make negative statements about Steve Irwin do not take the time to consider what he achieved, his amazing passion and dedication opened up a lot of minds to the need of conserving and protecting unique species and the habitat where they live.

Yes, it's a great idea for them to name an animal(snail) after him, although it's little silly. What he did in life was an amazing thing. But it's not that important for us to have a snail creature to be named after him because we still have Steve's family Bindi next in line will take his place and we will still have his memory in her. She will do her very best to do what her father did. <3
