Short tips are the key to long trips
Planning ahead can prevent holiday headaches.
It is important to approach driving in the right frame of mind - especially if you are taking a long holiday trip.
If you get stressed while driving, it is worth remembering that speeding is not only unsafe, it actually saves very little time.
Being involved in an accident is never worth the short amount of time you might lose by driving safely and being calm and courteous while on the road.
Tips for long trips;
- Try to avoid driving at a time when you would normally be sleeping - power naps can help if you’re tired and need a short rest
- If your passenger or passengers are licensed, it could help to share the driving (consider changing drivers every 90 minutes to two hours)
- Leave a minimum two-second gap between your vehicle and the one in front of you - this equates to approximately eight car lengths when travelling at 60 km/h, 12 car lengths at 80 km/h and 16 car lengths at 100 km/h. If towing, driving a 4WD or if it’s raining you may require up to a four-second gap to be safe1
- Remember that during the holiday period it may take a little longer to get to your destination. Take your time on the road and drive safely.
- Instead of drinking hot coffee on long distance drives, consider packing a thermos of iced coffee instead. The coffee will help you stay awake and the cold fluid will invigorate you.
