Currumbin face tough task

CURRUMBIN Barbarians hope to continue their good form in round five of the AussieBum Queensland Cup in Mooloolaba this weekend.

AUSSIEBUM finals competition is expected to be at fever-pitch this weekend at Mooloolaba.

FRESH from victory in Sydney at the weekend, national champions the Currumbin Barbarians hope to continue their good form in round five of the AussieBum Queensland Cup in Mooloolaba this weekend.

Having destroyed the gun Sydney crews at the Manly carnival, the Barbarians have now set their sights on conquering the all-powerful Kurrawa crews who have dominated this year’s surf-rowers action.

However it’s not just the Kurrawa trio they must be wary of, with clubmates Huskels, round-four winners Northcliffe BMD and the superb Met Caloundra crew all gunning for the win.

Similarly, the return this weekend of the dominant Kurrawa boats in the women’s open division means last week’s victors, Kawana Waters must lift their performance to stay on top and break the Gold Coasters’ stronghold.

The under-19 competition is the hottest in five years, with Currumbin Highland- ers, Alexander Headlands and Perigian all neck-and-neck as they get ready to take on the NSW crews at the ASRL Open in Wollongong in the coming weeks.

This weekend will see the biggest turnout of the season thus far, with points at a premium for the remaining finals places in this, the fifth and final round.

Mooloolaba boat captain and sweep Grant Cooper is expecting a big weekend of racing, with early indications there will be a full turn- out of crews in every division.
