Burleigh butcher Phillip and his mum Sue Smith will choose the finalists who go through to the public voting.
EVERY mother wants the right girl for her son.
And Phillip Smith’s mother Sue is no exception.
Mrs Smith is determined to help Phillip on his romantic quest and will help sift through the applications for the Gold Coast Mail's Butcher Wants a Wife.
"I was a bit reserved at first, but I can see a positive side and I hope he meets someone out of the whole thing," Mrs Smith said.
"I’d like what all parents would like and he’s had some relationships that didn’t work out.
"Most important would be a girl who has a life of her own and not be totally, utterly reliant on Phillip."
She said taking on Butcher Wants A Wife was not out of character for Phillip.
"He’s quite a friendly person and a people person so it doesn’t surprise me he is doing this," Mrs Smith said.
"He was a good child and a lot of fun, but I can’t say sleep was at the top of his list as a baby.
"He was a wild child in the teenage years, but we got there in the end and he has always loved boating and fishing.
"He’s a good Kiwi at heart."
Phillip’s father Barry said Butcher Wants a Wife was a great idea.
"Phillip does work long hours and no real opportunity to meet women," he said.
"We were joking about it at first and one morning as I was driving to work I thought ‘this might work’.
"Farmers are doing quite well at the moment and butchers need some love."
Mr Smith was quite direct in what his ideal woman for Phillip would be.
"Someone with a brain and someone he can have a good time with," he said.
"A girl who could bone beef and chicken would be great too.
Mr Smith said Phillip had always been an outdoors person.
"He’s always been into sport, like rugby union, BMX racing and fishing," Mr Smith said.
"You go to be pub with him and he is the one on the dance floor.
"But at the same time he doesn’t want all the limelight."
"It started off as a joke but I would like to see him meet someone out of it," he said.
Butcher Wants a Wife applications have now closed.
