Currumbin Viking's newest edition to the surf lifesaving team was officially 'christened' last Friday.
THE latest addition to Currumbin’s surf life saving fleet was officially launched last Friday.
Gold Coast Mayor, Ron Clarke, was there to christen the brand new boat at Elephant Rock.
Donated by Stockland shopping centre, it is the newest member of the Currumbin Vikings Surf Life Saving Club.
Viking’s executive officer, Michael Wilkins, said he was extremely pleased to welcome the addition at this point in the season.
“We’re very grateful to have this gold level sponsorship from Stockland,” Mr Wilkins said.
The club has 27 boat crews this season, with only 11 boats.
“Having this new boat will allow greater access to the boats for our teams,” he said.
“And obviously being a brand new boat, it will allow our top teams to compete at their full potential.
“We have a really great relationship with Stockland and they donate one every year.”
Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Life Saving Club has served the Gold Coast for 90 years, and now has 1300 lifesaving members and club membership of almost 5000.
Stockland’s regional manager for the Gold Coast and Northern NSW, Col Dutton, said the company was pleased to be able to provide another boat for the growing club’s fleet.
“We are proud to have been associated with this Gold Coast institution for 10 years and look forward to continuing that strong association in the future,” he said.
Father Kevin Smith from St Monica’s at Tugun was also on hand last week to bless the new boat and all who rowed in it before Cr Clarke conducted the traditional christening with champagne.
