Mick Fanning
REIGNING world champion Mick Fanning has been eliminated from the season-opening Quiksilver Pro men's world surfing tour event after an upset loss to fellow Australian Kai Otton.
Fanning struggled from the start of his third-round heat at Snapper Rocks, falling off his first two waves and passing up a wave that ended up giving the victory to Sydneysider Otton.
“Kai was surfing great,” said a bitterly disappointed Fanning.
“I watched him surf yesterday, he went mad against Dingo (Dean Morrison) and I knew he was going to be a tough opponent.
”He just got the better waves and when I gave him that wave, it didn't look that big.
“I had priority and was in the lead and I thought I might just wait for a bigger one and I just couldn't find anything - there just wasn't anything out there.”
Defending event champion Joel Parkinson cruised through his heat and will meet Dane Reynolds from the USA in the quarter-finals with Western Australia's Taj Burrow posting a win to set up a clash with in-form Brazilian Adriano De Souza.
