Nude riders hit the road

IT'S working out which question to ask first that dominates your thinking when you arrive at your first nude bike ride.

Bike riders gather on Byron Bay rail station for the annual Byron Bay Nude Bike Ride to help raise awareness of the world’s excessive use of fossil fuels.

IT’S working out which question to ask first that dominates your thinking when you arrive at your first nude bike ride.

Is it uncomfortable? Where do you keep your mobile so you can update your twitter profile?

And perhaps most crucially, why are you doing this?

The official answer to the last question is that the group of about 20 riders who congregated with their bikes, plenty of body paint, but not much else, at Byron’s railway station yesterday is that they were raising awareness about the world’s excessive use of fossil fuels.

So it’s a good thing cameras are battery and not electricity operated, otherwise yesterday’s event would have caused more environmental damage than it prevented, given the fascinated crowd that gathered at the station to document the event before the riders took off.

Melanie Baker from Melbourne and Amanda Kerr and Teena Porter from Wollongong, were three friends hardly expecting to witness a nude cycle through Byron, no matter what it was in aid of.

“I can’t believe it’s actually happening,” Ms Palmer said.

And yet, Ms Baker said the ride did point to the Bay’s unique take on raising political awareness.

“I think it epitomises the aura Byron holds.

"You wouldn’t see this in downtown Frankston,” she said.

Ms Porter was just hoping the riders had enough sunscreen.

They seemed to as every rider slip, slopped and slapped all parts of their body before they commenced their journey.

And while the official answer for the nude ride was forthcoming, so was an unofficial one from Byron Bay cyclist Rudy Surina.

“It’s better in the nude. It’s more free,” he said.

Get a whole nude attitude!
Nude is normal
Like your body? Show it!
Who says there's anything wrong with skin?
Skinful isn't sinful
Turn life skin-side out - go naked
It's time to turn your life skin-side out

What a joy to skinny-dip,
Bare as one can be,
Water felt on all my skin
As it washes over me.

To feel warming rays all over,
Lying in the sun,
Remembering to rotate when
One side enough is done.

each to their own.
its takes alsorts to make the world go 'round,
and if we were all the same the world would be a very boring place.

I have no problem with public nudity -but the laws of NSW --- or at least the Police -- have --- So, where were they? or were they simply administering the law as they choose? ( Like In Noosa?)
Its either legal or its not.
Does it mean the police are in dereliction of their duty, or that the laws of changed? ( or there just weren't enough rostered police to handle the situation?) --

Either way, as I see it, a precedent has now been set, Public nudity, no arrests --- that means no court can fairly incriminate others who do it ( er within the state of NSW)

I hope they wore their helmets!

I reckon it would be a very uncomfortable ride.

I guess if none of the public watching made an official complaint to the police, they would not be required to arrest anybody. And the nude body is not indecent anyway- just natural.
Bikes rather than cars makes sense in a world runing out of oil. Less pollution!
No clothes means less power and water used on washing. No furs! No water thirsty cotton! No farting and belching sheeep for wool!
And the public nudity draws enough attention to get their point accross ( no pun intended).

Beauty is only skin deep and in the eye of the beholder. They all have kind souls who care about the planet, not our comments.

Probably promote more pollution from the sunscreen use than if they wore clothes- clothes are reusable, got to keep buying sunscreen....
I wouldn't want people riding through my town nude every day, I presume thats the same for most people....
