QUEENSLANDERS will be able to claim a plumped-up $11,000 grant for new homes in regional areas from this week in a fast-tracked state government plan.

Treasurer Andrew Fraser on Monday announced he was bringing forward a plan to pay homebuyers an extra $4000 to build or buy in regional areas to help lure people away from Queensland's crowded southeast corner.

The boost to the $7000 grant was due to come into place on July 1, but will now kick in on Tuesday.

Mr Fraser said he wanted to ensure the measure began stimulating the economy as soon as possible.

He also wanted to avoid a situation where homebuyers were putting off signing contracts in order to collect the money.

"The feedback has been so good that we want to bring it forward and start it from tomorrow (June 1)," Mr Fraser told reporters in Rockhampton.

"We have already had a high level of enquiry of people looking to take advantage of this."

The boost will apply to newly-built homes in areas outside Brisbane, Gold Coast, Redland, Logan, Ipswich, Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim, Somerset, Moreton Bay and Sunshine Coast council areas.

The measure is one of a raft designed to address the state's population boom.

Others include making Townsville a second capital city and moving some government functions to regional areas.
